Start of a Journey
This is meant to be a journal of our experiences together as Coach and Aspiring Coaches.
People coach for different reasons, some for the honours, some for the experience and some for the relationships. Others coach for a second chance to re-live precious memories from the past. Yet others coach as a means to achieve unfulfilled personal dreams in the lives of others.
Whatever reasons it may be, we can all admit that we are less than perfect and thus our motives may not be entirely pure and altruistic. The key is reflection and awareness, because our players value honesty and integrity rather than perfection (from us).
Which is pretty important for coaches (to reflect upon too), so that we will not expect perfection out of our players, but rather an effort to the best of their abilities.
John Wooden the famous coach from UCLA says,
So what do you want to achieve out of this 2 months together?

"They call me coach" sounds really Coach K.
I have gotten insights into the coaching world of the U.S' top colleges' coaches. Forgive me if that sounded a real mouthful. What I've gathered as the topmost essential thing - is to have heart.
It is heartening indeed to see future generations of Gryphon's ballers stepping onto the long hallowed courts training and preparing. I feel proud of course to be able to pass on my experiences as an alumnus now.
For simple reference, I would just break down my goals into two parts - both off the court and on the court.
On court - offense entertains, defense wins games, rebounds wins championships. Cliched this may sound, it holds dearly true (Woodland's Ring). I think the basic requirement of a player is hustle. You may possess a whole lot of skill or score efficiently, but if you do not play with your heart, everything is nullified, because when it comes to the crunch, you will never perform.
Naturally, the intrinsic foundation upon which success of a basketball team is built upon is undoubtedly teamwork. That is what I really want to see - being able to stick up for each other, play good team basketball. That simple.
Off the court -
Team cohesion. Forging strong bonds between players that remain unshaken long after playing years have gone down in history books is something that comes with time and true friendship. As this spills over onto the court, playing as a team comes naturally. Encouraging the heart then comes as a reflex.
This is just a preamble for more to come
